BRONCS ROAD SWING CONTINUES AT WASHINGTON STATE

SPOKANE, Washington - The University of Texas - Pan American (UTPA) men's basketball team continues their four game road trip on Friday night as they travel to face the Cougars of Washington State at the Spokane Arena. Tip-off for Friday's match-up is scheduled for 9:00 PM CT. This game is not on the Washington State campus in Pullman, WA.

The Broncs (3-7) is still looking for their first road victory of 2010-11. UTPA is coming off a 68-55 road loss to Northern Arizona University on Wednesday night in Flagstaff. UTPA struggled with their outside shooting hitting just two of their 18 three-point attempts. Senior Perry Petty had 13 points led for the Broncs but was the only double-digit scorer. Sophomore Aaron Urbanus scored nine points while Jared Maree and Enique Mason scored eight points apiece to chip-in for UTPA.

Urbanus leads the Broncs in scoring at 14.4 points per contest. Petty is creeping on the team lead as he has scored 20+ points per game in three of his last five contests. Petty scored 14.3 per game for UTPA. Urbanus is also one of the top three-point shooters in the country as he hits 50% of his attempts from downtown.

Washington State (6-1) beat in-state rival Gonzaga in run-away fashion, knocking off the Bulldogs 81-59 at home Wednesday night. Junior guard Klay Thomson was impressive for the Coogs. Thompson led all scorers with 24 points, and added seven steals, six assists, six rebounds and even blocked a shot. WSU got off to a quick start and never looked back as they sank five 3-pointers in a 3-minute span during a 17-1 run for a 25-6 lead with 7:16 left in the half. Gonzaga had made just two of 17 shots at that point. Washington State made seven of its first eight shots to open the second half for a 47-31 lead to runaway with the win.

The Cougars lost last Friday at Kansas State 63-58 after starting the season with five consecutive victories. Thompson is WSU's leading scorer at 21.6 points per contest.The Cougars have blown out their opponents in their wins this season winning by an average of 21.1 points.

The Cougars and Broncs have met three times with WSU holding the series lead 2-1. The Broncs last trip to Washington State was on December 7th, 2001 where they nearly pulled the upset, but fell 60-57.
Texas-Pan American led 35-26 at intermission on the strength of a 12-0 run over a four minute plus span late in the first stanza. After the Broncs trailed 63-59 they closed to within a single point on three occasions, the last coming at 68-67 after Kevin Mitchell drained a three with 13.7 seconds remaining. Mire Chatman led all scorers in the game with 29 points.

The Broncs lone win in the all-time series was on February 28th of 2000 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Brian Merriweather's 17 points accounted for nearly a third of Texas-Pan American's scoring in a 55-52 victory over the Cougars. Merriweather broke the UTPA's single-season record for 3-pointers made by hitting three to run his season total to 111.
