Broncs Open Season With Two Victories

EDINBURG, TX--The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team opened their 2010 season with a 23-17 win over UT-Brownsville (UTB) and a 5-1 victory of Prairie View A&M (PVAMU) on the first day of the eighth annual Al Ogletree Classic, today (Feb. 26) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Game 1
The first game was an offensive display as both teams combined for a total of 40 runs on 34 hits and nine errors. The Broncs used five pitchers with Scott Wingo earning the win. UTB used a total of six pitchers with Danny Gidora being tagged with the loss.

The Broncs scored first with three runs in the second inning, but UTB answered back in the top of the third with five runs to take an early 5-3 lead. The Broncs came back in the home half of the third with five runs of their own to recapture the lead. The Broncs added a run in the sixth inning and added four more runs in the seventh inning. UTB added ten more runs before the game was over by scoring four runs in the seventh and six runs in the eighth.

Jose Mendoza went 4-for-5 with three RBI's and a double. Angel Ibañez was 3-for-4 with four RBI's and a homerun. Alex Carnal went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and two doubles.

Game 2

Cody Plunk gave up one hit over seven scoreless innings picking up his first win as a Broncs. Troy Green and Guadalupe Barrera each pitched one inning and allowed one hit apiece with Barrera picking up the save. For PVAMU, starting pitcher Benjamin Blackburn went 4.1 innings giving up four runs, all earned, and three hits and five walks, falling to 0-1 for the season.

As in the first game, the Broncs scored first with three runs in the second inning and added a run in the third and another run in the fifth. PVAMU scored their only run of the game in the eighth inning.

Offensively for the Broncs, Abraham Garcia went 2-for-3 and Vincent Mejia went 1-for-2 with three walks.

Day two of the Al Ogletree Classic continues tomorrow with UTB and PVAMU at 3:00 p.m. followed by the Broncs and PVAMU at 7:00 p.m.
