EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) Islanders Wednesday, March 31 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on the UTPA campus.
The afternoon match began with special introductions as the team celebrated seniors Megan Bedeau, Sarah Burton, Luisa Cantu and Nina Ciric as they prepared to take UTPA's home court for the last time this season.
"Despite taking over the programs so late in the season, I have embraced the opportunity to get to know these girls--my seniors especially. They are quality girls on and off the court, and I count it a privilege that they call me coach," said head coach Chris Taylor.
In singles action, the Lady Broncs were led by Bedeau, who defeated the Islanders' Adrienne Kovacs at line 3. Sophomore Andrea Salvetova also notched a win topping Naia Filmalter 6-4, 6-4 at line 6.
At Nos. 1 and 2, the Isalnders' Mirna Cicak defeated Cantu 6-2, 6-3 while Doris Kuselj outlasted Ciric 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 4 position, UTPA's Reetta Raty fell 6-3, 6-4 to Bianca Discordia. Burton started the set strong but was edged by LeAnne Mascall 7-6, (7-3), 6-0.
"No one likes to lose. But we can certainly walk away from that knowing that we played some good tennis. I think we let a few points slip away from us in some key situations, but overall we hit the ball well today," Taylor said.
The teams did not compete in doubles since the match had been clinched in singles action.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action April 10 at 10 a.m. at Prairie View A&M University in Houston.
