BRONCS BATTLE HUSKIES IN HOUSTON AS ROAD SWING CONTINUES

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Texas - Pan American (UTPA) men's basketball team will look to put an end to their 10 game losing skid on Saturday night as they face off against Great West Conference and intrastate rival Houston Baptist University. The battle between the Broncs and Huskies will be part of a GWC men's and women's doubleheader at Sharp Gym, with the men's game scheduled for a 7:35 tip-off. 

The Broncs (3-16, 0-2 GWC) are coming off a disappointing 70-63 defeat at the hand of Chicago State University last Saturday. The Broncs held a lead for a majority of the first half and led 60-59 with 4:09 to play after a Brandon Provost three. The Cougars took the lead for good at 61-60 on Carl Montgomery's lay-up with 3:01 remaining. CSU ended the game on an 11-3 run.

The Broncs are without senior guard Perry Petty who was suspended from the team indefinitely before the Chicago State game. Perry is the team's leading scorer at 16.6 points per game. Aaron Urbanus is second, and the active scoring leader at 11.4 per game. Provost has scored in double figures in four of the last five UTPA games and no averages 10.5 per game.
Matt Mierzycki leads the Broncs with 5.2 rebounds per game.

The Huskies (1-16, 0-2 GWC) are lead by senior guard Andrew Gonzalez who is the top scorer in the Great West with 20.9 points per game and also pulls down 5.2 rebounds per game. Junior forward Terry Bembry averages 8.4 points per game and ranks fourth in the league with 7.3 rebounds per game. Senior guard Michael Moss averages 9.1 points per game and leads the league with 2.9 steals per game.

The Broncs are 10-7 all-time against HBU. However, the Huskies won both meetings against the Broncs last season, a 76-62 decision at Sharp on Feb. 27 and an 84-82 overtime thriller in Edinburg on Feb. 10.
