EDINBURG, Texas- The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team suffered its third straight loss after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the North Dakota Fighting Sioux at the UTPA Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
The Broncs (5-17, 1-4 GWC) fell behind early in the opening set but a service ace by
Michelle McNamee tied things up at six. It went back and forth until North Dakota grabbed their biggest lead of the set after an attack error by the Broncs that made the score 21-15.
Kristi Garcia rallied the Broncs back with a service ace that cut the Fighting Sioux lead to 21-18. UTPA tied the set at 24 after
Sarah Davis and
Shauna Miller blocked Annika Smed but UND grabbed the final two points to take the first set 26-24.
In the second set, UTPA grabbed the 1-0 lead after a service error by UND. Devin Trefz then dished out three straight service aces to give the Fighting Sioux the 4-1 lead. The Broncs answered back with a 4-1 run that was capped by a kill by
Shauna Miller that tied the set at five. UND then went on an 11-3 run giving them the 16-8 lead and eventually taking the second set 26-16.
Krysta Freitas started the third set for the Broncs with a kill giving UTPA the early lead. After UND tied things at three, they went on a 10-4 run to grab the 13-7 advantage. The Broncs responded with a 7-3 run that got them within two at 16-14. Smed led the Fighting Sioux down the stretch as UND finished off the set and the match with a 25-15 third set victory.
The Broncs were lead by Freitas who had six kills and eight digs while
Michelle McNamee added seven kills in the contest. Defensively,
Juri Franzen led the way with 12 digs.
Shauna Miller had 14 assists and
Macey Singleton added 10.
For UND (17-4, 4-1 GWC), Trefz had a game-high 12 kills. Taylor Bohannon had 14 digs defensively and Ellen Krueger had 23 assists.
The Broncs will return to action on Tuesday Oct. 18 against Texas Southern with the non-conference match scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
