EDINBURG, Texas- The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team had their two-match win streak snapped after a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-14) loss against the University of New Mexico (11-10) Sunday afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs (7-18, 1-4 GWC) fell behind early 7-1 after a couple of errors but then fought back to tie the set at 11.
Ashten Landry had a back-to-back service aces in the middle of New Mexico's 14-3 run as the Lobos took the first set 25-14.
In the second set,
Maria Kliefoth recorded a kill that gave UTPA the early advantage. A kill by
Shauna Miller pushed the Broncs lead to 6-3. The Lobos responded with a 7-2 run to take the 10-8 lead. Another kill by Kliefoth tied the second set at 15 and then after exchanging points UTPA grabbed the 17-16 lead after a kill by
Macey Singleton but New Mexico finished the set on a 9-2 run for the 25-19 victory.
It was a back-and-forth contest early on in the third set as there were six ties between both teams. Kelly Williamson had back-to-back kills giving New Mexico the 8-6 lead, a lead they would not give back. A kill by
Sarah Davis got the Broncs within three at 13-10 but Williamson added another kill that pushed the Lobos' lead 15-11. Williamson closed out the match with yet another kill giving New Mexico the 25-14 third set victory and the match.
Diara Reynolds recorded a team-high seven kills while
Ashten Landry chipped in five kills and eight digs.
Juri Franzen paced the defense with 16 digs and
Shauna Miller set the offense up with 23 assists.
Williamson had a game-high 22 kills for New Mexico. Allison Buck the Lobos defense with 13 digs while Jordan Russell added seven digs of her own and had 22 assists.
The Broncs hit the road for their next two matches as they travel to North Dakota on Thursday Oct. 27 and Utah Valley on Saturday Oct. 29. They return to the Fieldhouse on Nov. 3 to face off against NJIT.
