EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team used a 16-2 first half run and a 15-4 second half run to beat the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils 77-61 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Dustdevils (6-4) took the lead right off the bat when
Evan Matteson hit a three-pointer, but the Broncs scored the next six points, including an alley-opp dunk by
Brandon Provost, to take the lead. Provost finished with 18 points.
The game was tied at 6-6 and 9-9 before the Broncs (3-8) scored 11-straight points as part of a 16-2 run that featured three three-pointers by
Jared Maree, who scored 15 of his game-high and season-high 22 points during the first half, as the Broncs took a 25-11 lead.
The Broncs led 29-17 on a three-pointer by
Aaron Urbanus with 4:02 remaining, but the Dustdevils went on a 9-0 run to pull within 29-26 on a lay-up by
Scottie Payne two minutes later.
Urbanus finished with 11 points while hitting a pair of three-pointers.
The Broncs' lead shrunk to 33-31 in the opening seconds of the second half, but Provost hit a hook shot with 17:25 remaining to spark a 15-4 run over the next five and a half minutes as the Broncs went up 48-35.
The Dustdevils were led in scoring by Payne, who scored 15 points. Matteson added 14 and
Ryan McLucas finished with 10.
The Broncs return to action when they host the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
