WEST POINT, New York – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team closed the game on a 15-2 run, but fell short to the Army Black Knights, 61-59, on Sunday at Christl Arena.
Trailing 59-44 with 6:08 left in the game, the Broncs (4-9) started their comeback attempt.
Josh Cleveland hit a free throw and
Nick Weiermiller nailed a three-pointer.
Andrew Stire responded with a lay-up to put the Black Knights (4-7) up 61-48 with 5:13 remaining. The Broncs scored the final 11 points of the game, capped by an
Earl Jefferson free throw to pull within two with 46 seconds remaining.
The Broncs had a chance to take the lead with five seconds left, but
Brandon Provost missed a three-pointer and the Broncs were not able to get the ball back.
Jared Maree led the Broncs in scoring with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
Jesus Delgado was next with 10 points.
The Black Knights jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but after Jefferson hit a pair of free throws,
Ruben Cabrera and Maree hit three-pointers to put the Broncs on top 8-5.
Ella Ellis tied the game with a three-pointer, and after Delgado gave the Broncs the lead back with a lay-up, Ellis hit two-straight lay-ups to kick-off a 6-0 run that saw the Black Knights take a 14-10 lead.
The Broncs were within 25-21 on a Maree jumper with 4:06 remaining, but the Black Knights scored the next seven points to build an 11-point lead.
The Black Knights maintained their lead for much of the second half, going up 59-44 on a pair of Ellis free throws with 6:08 to go.
Ellis led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting to go with six rebounds and three steals.
The Broncs return to action on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. when they visit St. John's.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
