EDINBURG, Texas - Three -point shooting is usually one of the strengths for the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team, but on Saturday night it was their Achilles' Heel. The Broncs shot just 20 % from beyond the three-point arc and saw a seven point halftime lead disappear as they fell to the Chicago State Cougars 70-64 at the UTPA FIeldhouse. The loss was the 15th consecutive for the Broncs.
UTPA took their first lead of the contest at the 13:00 mark of the first half when
Brandon Provost hit his only three-pointer of the game, giving UTPA the 15-12 lead. With 6:05 to play in the half the Cougars re-claimed the lead on a Hajji Martin lay-up giving CSU a 26-24 advantage.
The Broncs then closed out the first period on an 11-2 run and led 35-28 at the intermission.
Jared Maree had 14 first half points, including four three-pointers.
In the second half the Cougars regained control of the game. CSU led by as many as nine points and outscored UTPA 42-29 in the second half to claim the victory. The Broncs struggled with their second half shooting as they made just one of their 11 three-point attempts.
Maree scored a team-high 15 points, although he scored just once in the second half, to lead for UTPA.
Matt Mierzycki was a rebound shy of a double-double as he chipped in with 13. Provost also added 13 for UTPA while
