EDINBURG, Texas- The University of Texas Pan-American women's basketball team defeated the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux 69-62 behind
Donna Jackson's third double-double of the season.
Jackson scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while making eight-of-nine free throws. The win for the Broncs is the first ever against the University of North Dakota.
The Broncs grabbed their first lead of the ball game after
Re-Shawndra Jackson made a three-point field goal with 17:54 left in the first half. UTPA then went on a 13-6 run that was capped by a pair of
Bianca Torre free throws that made the score 18-10.
The Broncs would go on a 10-minute scoring drought that allowed the Fighting Sioux to go on a 13-0 run giving them a 23-18 lead. Jackson finally broke the scoring drought with a layup at the 2:56 mark and Ce'monay Newell tied the game 23-23 with a three-point field goal. Mallory Youngblunt scored the final three points of the half for UND giving them the 26-23 half time lead.
In second half, UND extended their lead to nine points after going on a 7-0 run that was capped by a Youngblut three-point field goal with 18:00 left in the ball game.
Donna Jackson then scored four of the next six Broncs' points to cut UND's lead to 35-32.
Re-Shawndra Jackson gave the Broncs their first lead of the second half after making a three-point field goal to make it 44-41. UTPA would not relinquish the lead after that. The Broncs went on 13-6 run that was capped by a pair of
Donna Jackson free throws which gave UTPA their biggest lead of the night making it 64-54.
The Broncs shot 50% from beyond the arc in the second half and scored 20 points off of 16 Fighting Sioux turnovers.
Along with
Donna Jackson's double-double,
Ce'Monay Newell added 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting.
Bianca Torre chipped in 13 while going seven-of-eight from the free throw line and
Re-Shawndra Jackson added 12 points.
Mallory Youngblut scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Allyssa Wall added 10 points in the effort for UND.
The Broncs will start the Great West Conference Tournament Wednesday March 9th in Orem, Utah.
