BRONCS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN ELIMINATION GAME LOSS TO UNC

GRAND FORKS, North Dakota – The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth inning and had the tying run in scoring position with one-out, but could not complete the rally in a 7-5 loss to the University of Northern Colorado Wednesday afternoon at Kraft Field. With the loss the Broncs have been eliminated from the 2011 Great West Conference Championship Tournament.

The Broncs (21-31) scored the first run of the game in the second inning on an RBI single by Adiran De La Rosa. The single scored Mike McCarthy to give the Broncs the 1-0 advantage.

The Bears (24-31) took the lead in the second inning scoring two runs to take a 2-1 advantage. Jarod Berggren singled in their first run to tie the game. The next batter up was Ben Packard, who grounded out to shortstop, driving in Bret Fanning to take the lead.

The Broncs tied the game in the fifth on a Brandon Roush RBI single up the middle. The hit scored Iradier Hernandez from third to even the score at 2-2.

In the sixth, the Bears gained the lead by scoring five runs on four hits to take a 7-2 lead. Berggren has the big hit in the inning with a three-run double to left field.

The Broncs began their rally with a Mike McCarthy double to the gap in left-center field. Two batters later De La Rosa drove in McCarthy for the Broncs third run of the game. Roush then singled to load the bases with one-out. Stuart MacInnes singled to left to drive in Hernandez to make the score 7-4. Ibañez singled to left to score De La Rosa to cut the deficit to two at 7-5. Vinnie Mejia and Roger Bernal both struck out to end the game.

Joe Sawicki (W, 5-6) picked up the victory for UNC pitching 8.1 innings allowing 10 hits and five runs walking one and striking our four. Zack Zouzalik (L, 4-2) pitched well early, but took the loss for UTPA. Zouzalik struck out seven in his 5.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on six hits. Cameron Tallman earned the save for UNC.
