BRONCS BREAK SKID WITH SATURDAY SPLIT

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania- The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team split their final two matches of the Robert Morris Holiday Inn Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Broncs dropped a morning game to Eastern Michigan 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-18) and in the afternoon defeated Morgan State 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-15) to snap a 12-match losing streak. Both matches took place from the Sewall Center on the Robert Morris University campus. With the split the Broncs are now 2-13 on the 2011 season, the first under new head coach Brian Yale.

In the morning match versus Eastern Michigan, the Broncs took the first point of the opening set, but forced just six ties for the remainder of the set and fell 25-16. The Broncs forced their final tie of the set at 8-8 after a Diara Reynolds kill. The Eagles went on a 7-1 run with a kill from Ashley Mason capping it off to take a 15-9 advantage.

The Broncs dropped the second set to the Eagles 25-17 after they lead wire to wire. In the final stanza the Broncs fought valiantly as the set went back and forth with 12 ties and six lead changes in the early moments. Krysta Freitas' kill gave the Broncs a 14-12 lead on EMU. The Eagles responded with a 10-1 run to take a 22-15 lead. Katherine Krasowski's kill gave EMU the set and match victory at 25-18.

The shoe was on the other foot for the Broncs in their second match of the day, a 3-0 victory over Morgan State. The Broncs allowed only one tie in the opening set, taking it 25-19. The Broncs began the match on a 7-2 run, with a Reynolds kill capping off the opening run. The Bears rallied after falling behind 16-10, they rattled of six straight points to pull even at 16-16. The Broncs responded with four straight points and a 9-3 run overall to take the opening stanza.

In the second set, the Broncs went on a furious rally, trailing for a majority of the time before coming out on top 26-24. The Broncs fell behind 24-14, putting the Bears into a game point situation. A Reynolds kill on the next MSU serve was the start of a special comeback. The Broncs rattled off 12 consecutive points on Shauna Miller's serve, including a pair of service errors, and three more kills from Reynolds to clinch the set two victory and any momentum the Bears may have built.

In the final set, the teams traded the lead on three occasions with four ties with the Broncs ultimately taking it 25-15. Ijanae Holman's kill gave the Broncs a 7-6 lead, one they would not relinquish. UTPA rattled off a 10-3 run to take a 17-9 lead, capped off by another Reynolds kill. Four straight points from the Bears pulled them to within four points at 17-13. The Broncs closed out the set on an 8-2 run to take it 25-15.

Reynolds, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Broncs with 10 kills and had a .400 hitting percentage for the match against MSU. Michelle McNamee chipped in with eight kills of her own. Juri Franzen paced the defense for the Broncs with 13 digs. Kierra Outlin led the Bears in kills with 11.

The Broncs return home on Tuesday night when they face off against the Universidad Autonoma De Nuevo Leon at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 PM start time.
