BRONCS ATTEMPT FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WIN AGAINST NJIT SATURDAY

NEWARK, New Jersey - The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team is set to take on its second Great West Conference opponent of 2011 this Saturday against the New Jersey Institute of Technology at the Fleisher Athletic Center in Newark, NJ. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 PM CT start. 

UTPA (4-13, 1-0 GWC) comes into Saturday on a  three-match winning streak in which it beat Morgan State, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon and GWC foe Chicago State University in the past two weeks.

Although the CSU Cougars were a set from taking the win from the Broncs Thursday night in Chicago, UTPA responded in the fourth set and extended the match to dominate CSU 15-4 in the last game.

Ijanae Holman and Diara Reynolds were the strongest Broncs on offense as they recorded 20 and 13 kills, respectively. Holman was also a crucial factor in the defense leading the team in digs with 17; Juri Franzen added 16 digs.

Shauna Miller and Macey Singleton were the power source for the team with 31 and 18 assists each.

After 17 games this season, Ijanae Holman is the leading Bronc in kills with 2.40 kills per set; Michelle McNamee holds the second spot in this category with an average of 1.83. Sara Davis has tallied 40 blockings so far this season, while Juri Franzen is the most effective defender averaging 3.97 digs. Shauna Miller has helped the team with 7.47 assists per set.

NJIT (5-11, 0-1 GWC) hosts its fourth home match in a row tomorrow, including their first conference match 3-1 against Houston Baptist. Janet Shell and Camilla Tinari lead the Highlanders in kills; Tinari has posted 2.63 kills per set and Shell averages 3.34 kills and 2.30 digs this season. On the defense, NJIT has Audrey Shell is the player to look out to as she has recorded with 4.16 digs per set.

After this weekend's activity the Broncs will make a stop in Houston to play Prairie View A&M Monday evening before returning home to host HBU Saturday at 2 p.m.
