EDINBURG, Texas – Junior forward
Keandra Goodson recorded a career-high 15 rebounds for the second-straight game as part of her second double-double of the season to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team past the Our Lady of the Lake University Saints 73-66 on Monday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Six of Goodson's rebounds were offensive and she tied for the team lead with 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Goodson also dished out a career-high two assists to go with one steal in a career-high tying 31 minutes of action. She was one of four Broncs (6-11) to reach double-figures in scoring, along with
Donna Jackson (14 points),
LaQuita Garner (12 points) and
Franchesca Simon (12 points).
Simon hit a lay-up and a pair of three-pointers as the Broncs scored the first 10 points of the game en route to a 19-4 run over the first 4:31. The Saints (10-3) responded with a 17-4 run to pull within 23-21, but Harlingen-native
Bianca Torre broke the run with a three-pointer with 8:26 remaining in the first half.
Torre finished with six points on 2-of-5 shooting with four assists. Torre is now tied with
Becky Dube (1984-86) for fifth place on the all-time UTPA list in field goals attempted with 924. She also passed
Kelly Garrett (292, 1993-97) for second place on the assists list with 295.
Erin Lewis dished out three assists to move into a tie for fourth place with
Cheveron Terry (1997-01) with 241.
The Saints tied the game for the first time on a jumper by
Jennifer Davison that made it 26-26 with 5:43 left.
Chelsea Solis hit a jumper at the 3:15 mark to give the Saints their first lead at 29-28.
The Saints maintained the led until
Johnondra Patterson hit a lay-up with 13:49 remaining in the first half to tie the game at 44-44. Patterson hit another lay-up the next time down the court to give the Broncs the lead, but
Arlene Cisneros hit a lay-up to tie the game. Goodson responded with a basket and Patterson hit a free throw as the Broncs took a 51-48 lead that they did not relinquish.
Edinburg-native
Laura Torres hit her second-career basket for the Broncs in the closing minute of the game.
The Saints were led by Cisneros, who scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc. Edinburg-native
Stephanie Nunez scored three points with one rebound, one assist and one steal.
The Broncs return to action on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. when they visit Texas Christian University.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
