HOUSTON – Despite leading for 91.2 percent (36:29) of the game, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks 55-54 on Saturday at the David Jones Classic, hosted by the University of Houston, at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Broncs (2-5) took their first lead at the 18:39 mark of the first half when a
Franchesca Simon three-pointer made it 3-0. The Broncs didn't allow the Redhawks (3-3) on the board until the 12:23 mark, when a
Patricia Mack three-pointer made it 7-3.
The Broncs led by as many as 12, going up 37-25 on a layup by
Johnondra Patterson with 19:32 remaining in the second half.
The Broncs held the lead until
Olivia Hackmann hit a jumper to the game at 51-51 with 2:40 to go. The Redhawks took their first lead when a Hackmann free throw made it 52-51 with 1:15 left, but nine second later, Simon hit a jumper to put the Broncs back on top.
Bailie Roberts hit a free throw to tie the game at 53-53 with 51 seconds remaining, but
Jasmine Thompson responded with a free throw to give the Broncs a 54-53 lead with 24 seconds to go.
Jordan Hunter hit a layup with six seconds left to give the Redhawks the lead. The Broncs had a chance to win it, but
KaeLynn Boyd missed a three-pointer as time expired.
Three Broncs, all seniors, reached double-figures in scoring as Simon and Harlingen-native
Bianca Torre each scored 12 points, while Patterson finished with 10. Torre also dished out a game-high five assists.
Cassandra Moody recorded a game-high 11 rebounds while blocking a game-high two shots.
Three Redhawks reached double-figures as well, led by Mack, who scored 11 points. Hunter and Hackmann each finished with 10 points.
Connor King recorded 10 rebounds.
The Broncs are back in action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
