Men's Tennis Visits St. Mary's Saturday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team concludes a stretch of three matches in three days in two cities on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against the St. Mary's University Rattlers at the St. Mary's Tennis Courts.

The Broncs (2-1) are 13-1 all-time against the Rattlers (0-2) in a series that dates back to 1983.

The Broncs are coming off of a 5-2 win over Bethany College, the #16 nationally ranked team in the NAIA, at Prairie View A&M University.
 
The top three Broncs dispatched their opponents in straight sets as Beau Bernstein, playing in the #1 spot, beat Marcelo Alecio, who is ranked #45 in the nation in singles in the NAIA, 63-62, Ricardo Hopker, playing in the #2 spot, beat Alex Sandri 6-2, 6-2 and Chetan Panditi, playing in the #3 spot, beat James Bragg 6-3, 6-3.
 
In the #1 doubles, the duo of Panditi and Bernstein defeated Alecio and Kane Olsen, the #10 nationally ranked team in NAIA, 8-2, while the team of Victor Alves and Ricardo Hopker defeated Shane Higgins and Mivhale Van Bogaert 8-6.
 
Scouting the Rattlers
 
The Rattlers were swept in a season-opening doubleheader by #75 Texas A&M-University Corpus Christi on Thursday, 7-0 and 4-0.
 
In the first match, St. Mary's dropped five of six singles matches in straight sets. In the second match, however, the two unfinished singles matches saw Rattlers Marcin Marczewski leading Gergo Weidinger 6-4, 3-0 in the #2 spot and Andrej Klipa leading Fernando Llorens 7-5, 1-0 in the #3 spot.
 
Local Flavor
 
The Broncs have a Rio Grande Valley native on the squad. Freshman Shane Kyral is from Harlingen and attended Harlingen South High School.
 
Next Up
 
The Broncs open Southland Conference play on Friday, March 2 at 2:00 p.m. when they visit the University of Texas at San Antonio.
