SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Playing their third match in as many days, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team won for the third time in a row, beating the St. Mary's University Rattlers 6-1 on Saturday at the St. Mary's Tennis Courts.
The Broncs (3-1) are now 14-1 all-time against the Rattlers (0-3).
The Broncs took all three doubles matches, with the #1 team of
Beau Bernstein and
Chetan Panditi beating
Marcin Marczewski and
Jake Williams 8-3.
Ricardo Hopker and
Sebastien Job bested
Nestor Moreno and
Carlos Olea 8-4 in the #3 spot, while
Rolf Niederstrasser and
Victor Alves held off
Andrej Kilpa and
Michael Ortiz 9-8 in the #2 spot.
In singles, Alves and Niederstrasser dispatched their opponents in the #4 and #6 spots, respectively, in straight sets, while Bernstein beat Marczewski 7-5, 7-6 in the #1 spot, Hopker beat Kilpa 3-6, 5-1 (retired) in the #2 spot and Panditi beat Moreno 6-0, 7-6 in the #3 spot.
The Broncs return to action when they open Southland Conference play on Friday, March 2 at 2:00 p.m. when they visit the University of Texas at San Antonio.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
