CHICAGO, Illinois – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team collected 21 more rebounds than the Chicago State University Cougars in a 59-52 win on Saturday at Jones Convocation Center.
The Broncs (10-15, 3-4 Great West Conference) complete the regular season sweep of the Cougars (6-21, 4-5 GWC) and move into a virtual tie for fourth place in the conference standings.
The Broncs out-rebounded the Cougars 45-24 overall and 20-11 on the offensive glass.
Adanna Opara hauled in a game-high nine rebounds (five offensive) while tying for the team lead with 14 points.
Johnondra Patterson also scored 14 points, a new career-high, while tying her career-high with seven rebounds (three offensive).
Keandra Goodson recorded seven rebounds (five offensive) as well.
Harlingen-native and junior guard
Bianca Torre was the third Bronc to reach double-figures in scoring, finishg with 12 points to move her career total to 1,200 points, Torre is the second Bronc to ever reach that plateau, and needs 27 more points to catch
Alex Gravel (1998-2003) for first place. Torre also moved up in free throws made, hitting four to tie
Alexis Williams (1997-2001) for second place with 255, seven shy of
Naima Williams (262, 1999-2003).
It was a back and forth game in the opening minutes. The Broncs trailed 9-7 in the opening minutes, but Patterson hit three-straight baskets to start a 10-0 run that saw the Broncs go up 17-9 with 10:42 remaining in the first half.
The Broncs led by as many as nine, but the Cougars used a 12-3 run to tie the game at 25-25 on a
Natalie Marlowe free throw with 5:05 left.
Mid-way through the second half, the game was tied at 40-40, but two Opara lay-ups fueled a 9-2 run as the Broncs took a lead that they did not relinquish.
Marlowe led the Cougars with 17 points.
The Broncs return to the UTPA Fieldhouse for three-straight home games on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when they play the University of North Dakota.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
