BAKERSFIELD, California – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team picked up their first win of the season, 5-2, over the California State University Bakersfield Roadrunners on Saturday at Stockdale Country Club.
The Broncs (1-2, 1-0 Great West Conference) and Roadrunners (0-6, 0-1 GWC) played very competitive doubles matches in the top two positions. The team of
Malin Andersen and
Suncica Strkic won in the #1 spot, 8-6, over
Daniela Dimas and
Nancy Ramirez, while the #2 team of
Wanda Beguelin and
Dana Nazarova edged the team of
Julian Mannix and
Vernoica Dimas 9-7.
In singles, the Broncs won in the top three positions in straight sets as Nazarova beat Vernoica Dimas 6-3, 6-3, Andersen defeated Daniela Dimas 6-1, 6-2, and Strkic beat Ramirez 6-1, 6-4. In the #4 position, Beguelin beat
Estefania Limpias 6-2, 7-6, 6-2.
The Broncs return to action as they kick off a stretch of three matches in three days when they visit the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
