Broncs Knock Off Utah Valley in Overtime

EDINBURG, TexasDonna Jackson took a charge with 0.2 seconds left in overtime to preserve a 71-70 victory for the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team over the Utah Valley University Wolverines on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The Broncs (11-16, 4-5 Great West Conference) led 63-59 with 1:10 left in regulation after a LaQuita Garner three-pointer, but Sammie Jensen hit a pair of free throws and Erika Newbold made a jumper to tie the game with 18 seconds left. Bianca Torre missed a shot with eight seconds left and Taylor Huber missed a shot at the buzzer for the Wolverines (13-13, 5-3 GWC) to send the game into overtime.
 
The Broncs built another four point lead with just over one minute left in overtime on baskets by Erin Lewis and Adanna Opara that made it 70-66. Newbold and Garner each hit a free throw with under 20 seconds left to keep the Broncs' lead at four, but then Whitney Jenkins hit a three with four seconds to go, making it a one-point game. Franchesca Simon missed a pair of free throws with five seconds left, but Jensen committed the charge to effectively end the game.
 
Torre, a native of Harlingen and graduate of Harlingen South High School, led the Broncs with 15 points, including 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line to pass Naima Williams (262, 1999-2003) for the program record in free throws made with 264. Torre also increased her career points total to 1,226 points, one shy of Alex Gravel (1,227 1998-2003) for the record.
 
Keandra Goodson was second on the Broncs in scoring with 13 points and eight rebounds while Garner scored 10 points.
 
The Wolverines were led by Jensen, who scored a game-high 23 points with a game-high 14 rebounds. Jenkins was second with 14 points while Newbold scored 12 points with nine rebounds.
 
The Broncs play their final game before the Great West Conference Tournament on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Houston Baptist University. The Broncs will honor their graduating seniors, Jackson, Lewis, Opara and Ashley Watson, before the game.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
