EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team went on a 13-0 run midway through the second half to come from behind to beat the University of North Dakota 70-58 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs (8-17, 3-2 Great West Conference) led 34-28 at halftime, but North Dakota (10-12, 2-3 GWC) opened the second half on a 7-2 run to pull within 36-35.
North Dakota took the lead for the first time in the second half when
Jordan Allard converted a three-point play with 10:50 left to make it 48-45, but the Broncs responded with a 13-0 run, punctuated by a
Josh Cleveland right hand slam to make it 58-48 with 5:30 left, a lead the Broncs did not relinquish.
Jared Maree led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 1-of-3 from behind the arc. He also hit all six of his attempts from the foul line and pulled in a game-high nine rebounds. Maree upped his career points total to 1,025, passing
Steve Heard (1,019 points, 1957-61) for 20
th place in UTPA history.
Three other Broncs joined Maree in double-figures as
Jesus Delgado scored 14 points while Cleveland and
Brandon Provost each added 10 points.
North Dakota jumped out to an early 12-5 lead as
Patrick Mitchell and
Brandon Brekke combined to hit five baskets for 10 points. The Broncs went on a 7-0 run to tie the game on a jumper by Provost with 12:01 remaining.
The Broncs took their first lead of the game just under five minutes later when Maree hit a pair of free throws to make it 18-17.
North Dakota was led by Brekke, who scored 15 points with eight rebounds.
Jamal Webb also reached double-figures, scoring 10 points.
The Broncs return to action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host CSU Bakersfield at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
