CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team (2-5) opens up the Islanders Women's Team Shootout on Friday at 11:00 a.m. against the Sam Houston State University Bearkats (7-3) at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
The Series
This is the 20
th meeting all-time between the Broncs and the Bearkast in a series that dates back to 1986. The Broncs have seven wins in that time, with the most recent one coming in 1997, by a score of 4-3.
Last Time Out
The Broncs are coming off of a 7-0 home win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on March 2.
The Broncs made quick work of the Javelins in doubles, as the #1 team of
Malin Andersen and
Sucica Strkic won 8-1 and the #2 team of
Wanda Beguelin and
Dana Nazarova each won 8-0. The #3 team of
Blanca Garcia Izaguirre and
Cindy Sands faced the toughest challenge, but scored five-straight points to close out an 8-2 win.
In singles, all six Broncs won in straight sets, including three double bagels as Andersen, Strkic and Beguelin all won 6-0, 6-0. Nazarova, Garcia Izaguirre and Sands each had a 6-0 set as well on their way to victory.
Scouting the Bearkats
The Bearkats are coming off of a 5-2 victory over McNeese State. The Bearkats controlled the doubles portion of the match, and although Imke Jagau and Sheridan Currie fell in the top two singles spots, the Bearkcats took the final four matches to clinch the victory.
The Bearkats are 18-9 (.667) in doubles, including an 8-1 record in the No. 2 position. The Bearkats are also 37-23 (.617) in singles, including records of 7-3 in the No. 3 position and 8-2 in both the No. 4 and No. 6 positions.
