Malin Andersen scored the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team's lone point in a 6-1 loss to the Sam Houston State University Bearkats in day one of the Islanders Women's Team Shootout on Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
Playing in the No. 1 singles position for the Broncs (2-6) for the first time this season, Andersen fell behind
Imke Jagau 4-6 after one set, but rallied back to take the second set 6-3 and the third set 10-4 to take the match.
Wanda Beguelin had a competitive match in the No. 4 spot, getting edged in the first set 7-5 before dropping the second set 6-1 to
Tatyana Postnikova.
The Bearkats (8-3) won one of the remaining singles matches by retirement and the other three in straight sets.
In doubles, the team of Andersen and
Suncica Strkic gave the Bearkats their toughest challenge before falling 8-6 to their No. 1 duo of Postnikova and
Nadia Dubyanskaya.
The Broncs face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
