Women's Tennis Faces Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team (2-6) finishes up the Islanders Women's Team Shootout on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders (7-2) at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
The Series
 
This is the 19th meeting all-time between the Broncs and the Islanders in a series that dates back to 2000. The Broncs have two wins in that time with the most recent one coming in 2007, by a score of 4-3.
 
Singles Shakeup
 
The Broncs used a brand new singles lineup against Sam Houston State on Friday, moving Malin Andersen to the No. 1 position for the first time this season and dropping Dana Nazarova to the No. 2 spot. Andersen, who is 2-4 in the No. 2 spot and 1-0 in the No. 3 spot, won her match. Nazarova fell in her match after spending her first seven matches at the top of the Broncs' lineup.
 
The Broncs also flip-flopped the No. 5 and 6 positions, with Cindy Sands moving up and Blanca Garcia Izaguirre moving down.
 
The only Bronc to remain in the same spot all season is Wanda Beguelin, who is 4-4 in the No. 4 position. The Broncs have also used the same doubles pairings all season long.
 
Last Time Out
 
The Broncs are coming off of a 6-1 loss to Sam Houston State University on Friday.
 
Playing in the No. 1 singles position for the Broncs for the first time this season, Malin Andersen fell behind Imke Jagau 4-6 after one set, but rallied back to take the second set 6-3 and the third set 10-4 to take the match.
 
Wanda Beguelin had a competitive match in the No. 4 spot, getting edged in the first set 7-5 before dropping the second set 6-1 to Tatyana Postnikova.
 
The Bearkats won one of the remaining singles matches by retirement and the other three in straight sets.
 
In doubles, the team of Andersen and Suncica Strkic gave the Bearkats their toughest challenge before falling 8-6 to their No. 1 duo of Postnikova and Nadia Dubyanskaya.
 
Scouting the Islanders
 
After splitting their first two matches, the Islanders won five-straight. They have since split their last two matches.
 
The Islanders have lost the doubles point in each of their last two matches, falling in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, but picking up wins with the No. 3 duo of Sandra Burges and Chelsea Horan.
 
The Islanders have excelled in singles play, going 38-13 (.745). Mirna Cicak has seen all of her action in the No. 1 spot, going 7-2. Horan is on a six-match winning streak and has gone 6-1 in the No. 5 spot and 1-0 in the No. 4 spot. Mia Matuszak is also on a six-match winning streak, going 5-2 in the No. 6 spot, 1-0 at No. 5 and 1-0 at No. 3.

The Broncs return home to face the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Orville Cox Tennis Center.
