Women's Basketball Falls in Semifinals

CHICAGO, Illinois – The fourth-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the top-seeded University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, 88-48, on Friday at Jones Convocation Center in the GWC semifinals.
 
The Broncs (13-17) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening minute on jumpers by Franchesca Simon and Erin Leiws. The Fighting Sioux (20-10) scored the next eight points, capped by a lay-up by Emily Evers that made it 8-4 Fighting Sioux.
 
The Broncs pulled within 14-13 on a LaQuita Garner three-pointer with 12:52 remaining and were within 20-19 on a pair of Jasmine Thompson free throws five minutes later, but Carly Rothfusz scored seven points to power a 9-0 run by the Fighting Sioux that made it 29-19.
 
The Fighting Sioux led for the rest of the game.
 
The Broncs had two players reach double-figures in scoring, as Garner scored 11 points and Erin Lewis scored 10. Johnondra Patterson led the Broncs with nine rebounds, tying her career-high.
 
Five Fighting Sioux reached double-figures as Alyssa Wall, Brianna Williams and Cy'erra Mills all scored 11 points while Evers and Routhfusz scored 10 points each.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
