Men's Tennis Closes Season Against Lamar Sunday

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team (7-9, 1-3 SLC) closes the season against Southland Conference opponent Lamar (6-10, 0-3 SLC) on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

Senior Day
 
This match marks the final match in the career of senior Beau Bernstein. While playing exclusively at the No. 1 positions this season, Bernstein has amassed a record of 20-10, going 11-5 singles and 9-5 in doubles.
 
Bernstein has worked his way up in singles over his four years. As a freshman he was 8-7 at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, and then 11-9 at No. 3 as a sophomore. Last season, Bernstein went 6-9 at No. 2 before taking a big step forward this season.
 
Bernstein played mostly at No. 2 and occasionally at No. 3 in doubles as a freshman, going 5-11. As a sophomore, however, Bernstein moved up to the No. 1 spot, teaming up with his brother Brett, then a senior, to go 15-5. He has remaining at No. 1 since, amassing a three-year record of 34-12.
 
For his career, Bernstein is 36-30 in singles and 39-23 in doubles, giving him a total record of 75-53.
 
The Series
 
The Broncs are 38-26-3 (.567) all-time against the Cardinals in a series dating back to 1958. Last season, the Cardinals edged the Broncs 4-3. In 2010, however, the Broncs beat the Cardinals 6-1 during the regular season and 4-1 in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament. The Broncs won four-straight against the Cardinals from 2008 through 2010.
 
Last Time Out
 
The Broncs are coming off of a 6-1 loss to UT-Arlington on Monday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The Mavericks jumped to an early 1-0 lead by sweeping through doubles. The Broncs started off singles on a good note, as Chetan Panditi blew by Nicolas Moreno 6-0, 6-3 on court four, but the Mavericks took the matches on courts one, to and three in straight sets to clinch the victory. Victor Alves played a close match at the No. 5 position, dropping the second set 7-6 after losing the tiebreaker. Sebastien Job came back from a one-set deficit to force a third set, but ultimately fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
 
 
Scouting the Cardinals
 
The Cardinals are coming off of a 4-3 loss to Air Force on Friday and are currently riding a five-match losing streak.
 
The only position the Cardinals have a winning record at is No. 5 singles, where they are 8-7, including a 7-6 mark by Bruno Snyder. The Cardinals are .500 at No. 4, with an 8-8 record, including a 7-7 mark by Carlos Valdenebro. Rob Lee has played the majority of the games at No. 1, going 6-6. He is also 3-1 at No. 2. Overall, the Cardinals are 41-54 (.432) in singles.
 
The Cardinals have had a consistent doubles lineup, with Lee and Marton Horvath going 5-10 at No. 1, Denis Ermilov and Valdenebro going 5-8 at No. 2 and Mikko Rajamaki and Snyder going 5-8 at No. 3.

Local Flavor
 
The Broncs have a Rio Grande Valley-native on the squad. Freshman Shane Kyral is from Harlingen and was part of a Harlingen South High School team that was ranked #6 in the state, finishing as the regional runner up in the 5A school division.
