EDINBURG, Texas – Playing in the final match of his career, senior
Beau Bernstein won his doubles match as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team fell 5-2 to the Lamar University Cardinals on Sunday at Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Bernstein teamed with
Chetan Panditi to beat
Martin Horvath and
Rob Lee 9-7 in the No. 1 doubles match.
Bernstein finishes his career with a 40-23 doubles record, including a 35-12 mark the No. 1 spot while playing there and winning at least 10 matches in each of the last there years.
In singles, Bernstein dropped a tough match in the No. 1 spot to Lee 6-5, 3-6, 2-6. Bernstein finishes with a career record of 36-31, moving up every year and having his best season yet as a senior, going 11-6 at the No. 1 position.
The Broncs (7-10, 1-4 SLC) started off the match well, sweeping through a closely contested doubles point as the No. 2 team of
Sebastien Job and
Ricardo Hopker won 9-7 and the No. 3 team of Harlingen-native
Shane Kyral and
Victor Alves won 8-6.
The Cardinals (7-10, 1-3 SLC), however, took five out of six doubles matches to clinch the win. The Broncs played tough, though as Job won 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 5 position. Alves played a tight match at No. 6, falling to
Milakko Rajamaki 6-1, 2-6, 6-7. Hopker also played a tough match, falling to Ermilov at No. 2 4-6, 5-7. The Cardinals took the other two matches in straight sets.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
