OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 11-1 in game two of a doubleheader on Friday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
The game ended after six and a half innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Wolverines (25-11, 11-0 GWC) exploded for seven runs in the first inning. After the first two batters reached,
Billy Burgess and
Austin Heaps hit RBI-singles and
Goose Kallunki homered to make it 5-0 before an out had been recorded. Broncs (21-10, 8-3 GWC) starter
Austin Casas (1-1) then issued a four-pitch walk to
Kai Hatch, who advanced to second on an error and third on a groundout, allowing him to score on a one-out single by
Jordy Hart. After a
Jake Rickenbach single moved Hart to third,
Sean Moysh picked up his second hit of the inning to drive in Hart and knock out Casas with the score 7-0.
The Broncs got one back in the second on an RBI-single by
Riley Goulding, but Hatch hit a sacrifice fly off of
Jonathan Delgado in the bottom of the inning to again make it a seven-run game.
Hatch hit a two-run home run as part of a three-run fourth to push the game out of reach.
Luis Flores pitched well in relief for the Broncs, pitched 2.2 scoreless innings. On the offensive side, Mission-native
Angel Ibanez and
Chris Torres each had two hits.
The Broncs and Wolverines complete this four-game series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
