Brothers Zouzalik Lead Broncs to Victory in Game One of Doubleheader

CHICAGO, IllinoisMichael and Zach Zouzalik combine for the win and the save in five and a third innings of scoreless relief to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the Chicago State University Cougars 5-3 in game one of a doubleheader on Friday at Brooks Field.
 
The Broncs (22-11, 9-4 GWC) led 3-0 after the first inning on a two-run double by Mission-native Angel Ibanez and an RBI-single by Will Klausing, but the Cougars (5-29, 3-10 GWC) came back with three of their own in the second while knocking out Colby McCasland with two outs in the inning.
 
Michael Zouzalik (3-0) came in and worked out of a bases loaded jam. He ended up pitching 4.1 innings, striking out six while allowing one hit and two walks.
 
The Broncs broke the tie in the fourth on a two-run single by Derek Hagy, who finished 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. He, Roger Bernal and Angel Ibanez combined to go 6-for-12 with four RBI and three runs scored in the top three spots in the lineup.
 
Zach Zouzalik pitched a scoreless seventh for his first save. It is the first time that one of the Zouzalik brothers got the win and the other the save in the same game. It was the fourth time this season one Zouzalik has relieved the other and the third time Zach has relieved Michael this season.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
