EDINBURG, Texas – In a tight match, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team fell to the four-time defending Southland Conference champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 5-2 on Tuesday at Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Broncs (7-8, 1-2 SLC) started off well, taking the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of
Beau Bernstein and
Chetan Panditi beat a team of Southland Conference player of the week
Aurelien Tave and
Peter Nagy 8-3. After the Islanders (9-9, 2-0 SLC) took the No. 3 match 8-4,
Sebastien Job and
Ricardo Hopker edged
Matt Westmoreland and
Alex Pavlov 9-7 in a match that was tied at both 5-5 and 6-6 at different points.
The Islanders took the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches in straight sets, but Job beat
Pietro Jordao 6-1, 7-5 on court six to bring the Broncs within 3-2.
Panditi played hard to try to tie it up. After falling 6-3 in the first set to
Fernando Llorens, he came back to take the second set 6-4. Llorens won the third set 6-3 to clinch the match.
The final match to conclude was Bernstein's. After winning the first set 7-5, Nagy came back to take the second set 7-6 and the tiebreaker 10-8 to get the point.
“Our guys competed well on every court,” Broncs head coach
Paul Goode said. “I was proud of the way they competed.”
The Broncs return to action when they welcome Southland Conference opponent UT-Arlington to the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Monday at 11:00 a.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
