EDINBURG, Texas –
Luis Flores turned in a strong outing in his first start of the season, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the University of Northern Colorado Bears 4-0 in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Flores (1-1) didn't allow a run through the first six innings, scattering three singles. In the seventh, however,
Adrian Schenk led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt,
Taylor Anderson was hit by a pitch and
Harrison Lambert hit an RBI-single. Another sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third and
Casey Coy was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Dylan Badura came in out of the bullpen and gave up a two-run single to
Adam Hilker and then hit
Colby Harrison with a pitch to again load the bases.
Nolan Atkins came in out of the bullpen and plunked
Jensen Park to force in a run and make it 4-0 Bears (25-26, 15-9 GWC).
That made a winner of
Kevin Willman (1-2), who pitched six scoreless innings, scattering three hits and one walk while striking out one.
Dan Talley pitched three scoreless innings for his first save.
The Broncs (27-18, 14-10 GWC) had a few opportunities to score.
In the first, the Broncs had runners at first and second with one out, but
Mike McCarthy hit into a double play.
Andy Fortuna singled and stole two bases in the sixth, but was stranded at third.
The Broncs also had two on with one out in the eighth, but stranded runners at first and third.
The Broncs return to action on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when they welcome Houston Baptist to Edinburg Baseball Stadium for game one of a four game series.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
