EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Houston Baptist University Huskies 4-2 in seven innings of game two of a doubleheader on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Trailing 4-1 entering the seventh, the Broncs (28-20, 15-12 GWC) put two on with two out.
Roger Bernal hit an RBI-double to right field.
Brandon Roush scored, but
Derek Hagy was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
That made a winner of
Tyler Hoelscher (4-4), who pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits. He struck out one and didn't walk anyone.
The Broncs got their other run in the fifth on an RBI-fielder's choice by Bernal, who went 3-for-4 to raise his batting average to .417.
The game was scoreless until the fourth, when the Huskies (24-30, 15-12 GWC) loaded the bases with nobody out against
Michael Zouzalik (4-1).
Josh Foust hit a grounder to third, leading the Broncs to turn a double play with the outs coming at home and first. However,
Sam Wiggins and
Bradley Brown, responded with back-to-back RBI-doubles to make it 3-0.
The Huskies added a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Curtis Jones to make it 4-0.
The Broncs and Huskies complete this four-game series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as the Broncs will honor all 10 seniors in a ceremony starting approximately 20 minutes prior to the start of the game. Gates open at 11:00 a.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
