NEWARK, New Jersey – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team clinched a winning season for the first time in 12 years with a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders on Sunday at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The last time the Broncs (26-15, 13-7 GWC) had a winning season was 2000, when they finished 31-19-1.
Senior
Michael Zouzalik (4-0) gave the Broncs one of the best starts of his career, going a career-high 8.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits and four walks while striking out two.
Dylan Badura recorded the final two outs for his first save.
Staked to an early 1-0 lead, Highlanders (19-22, 10-10 GWC)
Matt Coughlin (3-2) kept the Broncs off the board for the first four innings. In the fifth, however, the Broncs put two on with one out to set-up an RBI-single by
Shane Klemcke, tying the game at 1-1.
That was it until the eighth. With one out,
Riley Goulding came up with a pinch-hit double and
Roger Bernal singled, moving Goulding to third.
Austin McAuliffe came in out of the bullpen and allowed a sacrifice fly to Mission-native
Angel Ibanez to make it 2-1.
Bernal finished 3-for-4 for his seventh three-hit game of the season. He also raised his batting to .420 (73-174).
The Highlanders got their run in the third on an RBI-single by
Jeff Pizzi.
The Broncs kick-off an eight-game home stand on Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they welcome the University of Northern Colorado to Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
