EDINBURG – Graduate student
Javorn Farrell hit his first three three-pointers of the season to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team past the Huston-Tillotson University Rams 94-62 on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Farrell led the Broncs (1-2) with a season-high 18 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc plus 5-of-7 from the line with six rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block. Senior
Justin Leathers scored 14 points with a season-high eight rebounds and two steals while hitting all seven of his free throw attempts. Sophomore
Shaquille Hines scored a career-high 11 points. Senior
Josh Cleveland scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Junior
Lauri Toivonen scored 10 points as well.
Terry Johnson scored the Rams' (0-2) first 11 points and led the team with 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting, plus 7-of-8 from the foul line to go with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Sterling Lampley also reached double-figures, scoring 11 points.
The Broncs scored the first eight points of the game as Farrell hit a pair of three-pointers and
Josh Cleveland hit a jumper in the opening two minutes. The Broncs increased their lead to 13-2 on a
Shaquille Boga three-pointer and a
Hurley Johnson layup.
The Broncs went up 14 a few minutes later, but the Rams pulled within 10 twice, at 21-11 and 23-13.
Justin Leathers then bookended an 11-0 run with free throws over the next 2:34 to push the Broncs' lead to 21.
The Broncs extended their lead to 30 for the first time in 63-33 on a three-point play by Leathers with 9:21 remaining.
The Broncs took their largest lead of the game at 94-60 when Toivonen hit a free throw with 53.5 seconds remaining.
Redshirt freshman
Blake Provost scored the first five points of his career on 2-of-3 shooting with three rebounds and one assist in 11 minutes.
The Broncs open up a seven-game road trip on Friday as they continue the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina Islanders Basketball Tournament, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, when they face Tennessee Tech at 5 p.m.
