EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team beat the Laredo Community College Palominos, the No. 7 team among junior colleges, 4-3 on Friday in their home opener at the newly renovated Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The Broncs (1-2) and Palominos (0-1) fought hard for the doubles point. Thomas-Orestis Panoulas and Victor Alves breezed by Julio Cepeda and Eman Esfandi 8-3 at No. 3, but shortly afterwards, Caio Gomes and Luis Hernandez beat Felix Hasselberg and Chetan Panditi 8-4.
 
Meanwhile, a classic was developing at No. 1. Sebastien Job and Alejandro Sanoja led 7-6 and had a chance to clinch the doubles point, but Hector Ramirez and Hamid Derbani battled back to force a tiebreaker. The Broncs took a 2-1 lead, but the Palominos scored the next three points to go ahead 4-2. The Broncs scored the final three points to take the match 8-7 (7-4) and the doubles point to go up 1-0.
 
The Broncs extended their lead to 3-0 with quick wins at No. 5 and No. 6 as Alves beat Esfandi 6-4, 6-0 and Bishop defeated Alex Infante 6-3, 6-1.
 
The Palominos came back to tie it when Gomes beat Panditi at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4, Ramirez defeated Sanoja 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and Hernandez got past Job 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3.
 
At No. 1, Panoulas put up a bagel in the first set, 6-0, but dropped the second set to Derbani 4-6. Panoulas came back to win the third set 6-1 and clinch the match.
 
This Broncs continue this three-match home stand on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. when they host UTSA. Admission is free.
