EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team fell to the UTSA Roadrunners 3-4 on Sunday at the newly renovated Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Broncs (1-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point 2-1. After the Roadrunners (1-1) won at No. 1 8-6, the No. 3 team of
Thomas-Orestis Panoulas and
Victor Alves and the No. 2 team of
Felix Hasselberg and
Chetan Panditi won their matches 8-5 to clinch the point.
The Broncs and Roadrunners split the first four singles matches to finish in straight sets, with Alves defeating
Matt Mussenden 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 and
Alejandro Sanoja beating
Eric Buchalter 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 to give the Broncs a 3-2 lead.
At No. 3, Panditi took the first set 6-2, but
Tyler Brown bounced back to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-3.
Just like on Friday, with the match tied at 3-3, it all came down to No. 1. Panoulas beat
Martin Ayala 6-1 in the first set, but Ayala came back to take the second set 6-4. In the third set, Panoulas found himself down 3-0 before taking two of the next three games to pull within 4-2. Ayala took two of the final three games to win the set 6-3 and clinch the match.
This Broncs conclude this three-match home stand on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. when they open up Southland Conference play against Nicholls State. Admission is free.
