UTPA Men's Tennis Falls in Southland Conference Opener

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team opened Southland Conference play with a 1-6 loss the Nicholls State University Colonels on Tuesday at the newly renovated Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The Broncs (1-4, 0-1 Southland) took the early advantage when the doubles team of Chetan Panditi and Felix Hasselberg defeated Nico Mertens and Dimitry Kozionov 7-2.  UTPA took the doubles point after Sebastien Job and Alejandro Sanoja beat Damian Despotovski and Sidarth Sivakumar 8-5.
 
The Colonels (4-3, 2-1 Southland) took control of the match in singles play. Panditi lost the first 2-6, 2-6 to Mertens and then Ricardo Hopker fell 3-6, 2-6 to Kozionov.
 
In the number one singles spot Thomas-Orestis Panoulas faced Despetovski but lost 1-6, 4-6 and in the number three singles spot Job fell to Evan Karatzas 5-7, 1-6.
 
The Broncs battled until the end as Victor Alves took Sivakumar three sets before falling 6-3, 5-7 (5-10) and Sanoja lost in three sets to Roy Knight 6-3, 4-6 (4-6)
 
This Broncs are back in action on Saturday, February 16 at 11:00 a.m. when they visit No. 14 Baylor.
