Box Score
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana –
Brandon Provost hit a three-pointer with 3.7 seconds left in regulation to give the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team the lead, but a foul with one tenth of a second remaining led to free throws to force overtime before the University of New Orleans prevailed 75-73 on Wednesday at Lakefront Arena.
The Broncs (12-12) trailed 65-64 with 17.5 seconds left after
Justin Leathers made the first of two free throws. He missed the second, but the Broncs got the rebound and called timeout with 11.7 seconds to go. That setup Provost's shot, a deep contested three from the right wing to put the Broncs up by two.
The Privateers (7-13) came down the court to try to tie or win it, and lost the ball out of bounds as the buzzer sounded, leading the Broncs to go on the court and celebrate an apparent win. One tenth of a second was put back on the clock, allowing enough time only for a tip-in to try to force overtime. After a Privateers timeout and a Broncs timeout, the inbounds did not go towards the rim and was swatted away by
Lauri Toivonen. However, after the buzzer sounded and the game had apparently ended again, a foul occurring before the inbounds was called on
Shaquille Hines.
That led
Kevin Hill to the free throw line, and he hit both shots, marking his only two points of the game, to force overtime.
Tradarriu McPhearson hit a layup on the opening possession of overtime to put the Privateers ahead 69-67. They led by as many as five at 73-68 after a McPherson jumper with 2:53 remaining. The Broncs closed to within two twice, at 73-71 after a Provost three-pointer with 2:28 left and 75-73 after two Leathers free throws with 1:20 to go, but Toivonen missed a potential game tying layup with 11 seconds left and Leathers missed one with four seconds left to end the game.
Provost led the Broncs with 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-10 from behind the arc.
Jesus Delgado scored 14 points while hitting 10-of-12 free throws with eight rebounds. Hines scored 10 points.
Rarlensee Nelson led three Privateers in double-figures with 21 points and eight assists.
Lovell Cook scored 19 points while
Cory Dixon scored 15 points with seven rebounds.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. when they visit Utah Valley.
