EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team used a pair of four-run innings to beat the Arlington Baptist Patriots 11-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The game ended in the bottom of the eighth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule on a walk-off single by
Riley Goulding that scored
Brandon Roush.
The Broncs (6-11) led 1-0 with two on and two out in the second, when
Alex Howe hit a two-run double off the right field wall and
Derek Hagy hit a two-run home run over the very same wall to make it 5-0. It was Hagy's first-career home run.
One inning later, the Broncs loaded the bases with nobody out.
Chris Torres lined a single past the drawn-in
Andrew Cook at shortstop to score two runs. The throw from the outfield went to Cook, who threw to third base to try to get Goulding, but the ball got past third baseman
Carson Conatry and rolled into the camera well next to the Broncs' dugout, allowing Goulding to score and Torres to move to third. One out later, Torres scored on a sacrifice fly by Howe to make it 9-1.
The Patriots (9-26) scored their first run of the series on a
Josh Beckham home run in the top of the third. That was the only damage against Broncs starter
Dylan Badura (2-3), who pitched five innings of five-hit ball, striking out five and walking one.
Shane Ammon drove in the Broncs' 10
th run in the sixth with a two-out double to cap a 3-for-3 day that also saw him score two runs.
Roma High School alum
Isaac Martinez made his first home appearance, pitching a perfect eighth inning and recording his first career strikeout.
The Broncs and Patriots play game two of this doubleheader in approximately 30 minutes.
