GREELEY, Colorado – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the University of Northern Colorado Bears 6-4 on Friday at Jackson Field.
Riley Goulding went 0-for-4 to see his hitting streak end at 19 games, the longest by a Bronc (24-23, 14-6 Great West Conference) since 2006.
The Broncs jumped out to an immediate 2-0 lead against
Jake Johnson (5-3).
Derek Hagy led off the game with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, from where he scored on a one-out RBI-single by
Shane Ammon. After
Alex Howe singled,
Alberto Morales hit an RBI-double to make it 2-0.
Morales was the only Bronc with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4.
On the first pitch of the bottom of the inning,
Ryan Yamane hit a grounder to first, but Morales couldn't handle it, allowing Yamane to reach. One out later,
Sam Street (8-3) issued a four-pitch walk to
Nick Miller.
Colby Harrison followed with a two-run triple to tie the game.
Andrew Coffman then lined a single to center to drive in Harrison.
Ben Packard reached on an error, and after a bunt-single by
Ben Netzel,
Brooks Schneider hit into an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 4-2.
The Bears (22-22, 13-7 GWC) tacked on two more in the second. After back-to-back singles by Yamane and
Jensen Park to open the inning, Miller flied out, moving Yamane to third. An errant throw by Street allowed Yamane to score and Park to move to second, from where he scored on an RBI-single by Harrison to make it 6-2.
Harrison led the Bears by going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
That was it against Street, who settled down to pitch six and two-thirds innings, allowing just the six runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out six.
The Broncs got two back in the fourth, when
Will Klausing led off with a single,
Shane Klemcke hit an RBI-triple and
Chris Torres hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4.
Kevin Willman pitched three scoreless innings for his eighth save.
The Broncs and Bears continue this four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. Game one is scheduled to last seven innings while game two is slated for the full nine.
