GRAND FORKS, North Dakota –
Riley Goulding extended his hitting streak to 19 games, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the University of North Dakota 7-2 in in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Kraft Memorial Field.
Goulding is now on the longest hitting streak by a Broncs (24-22, 14-5 Great West Conference) student-athlete since 2006, when
Louie Alamia had a 24-game hitting streak. Goulding finished 1-for-5 and is now 24-for-63 (.381) during the streak
UND (16-18-1, 7-9 GWC) jumped on Broncs starter
Matt Daniels (1-5) right away.
Kris Kwak led off the first with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Zack Trygstad to make it 1-0.
In the second,
Tyler Follis led off with a double and moved to third with a groundout. One out later, he scored on an RBI-triple by
Jacob Threlkeld, who then scored on an RBI-single by Kwak to make it 3-0.
Taylor Petersen led off the third with a double to knock out Daniels.
Kyle Tokunaga came in and allowed a single to Trygstad, followed by an RBI-single to
Jeff Campbell to make it 4-0.
Tokunaga pitched well, going a career-high five innings and striking out a career-high seven. He pitched four scoreless innings before allowing three unearned runs in the seventh.
The Broncs broke through against
Alex Twenge (5-1) in the sixth.
Derek Hagy led off with a single. One out later,
Shane Ammon doubled, advancing Hagy to third.
Alex Howe followed with an RBI-groundout. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases,
Jacob Hucakaby hit an RBI-single to make it 4-2.
Twenge went seven innings, striking out two while allowing four hits and two walks.
The Broncs open up a four-game series at Northern Colorado on Friday at 4 p.m.
