CONWAY, Arkansas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team won their third match in a row after defeating the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions 3-0 in their second match of the Sugar Bear Classic at the Prince Center.
 
The Broncs (4-2) fell behind early in the first set but tied it up at five after a block by Maria Kliefoth and Krysta Freitas. UTPA took the 7-5 lead after a kill from Kliefoth, a lead they would not relinquish taking the first set 25-22.
 
In the second set, the Broncs took a 6-3 lead after a kill by Haley Durham but the Golden Lions (0-9) came back to tie it at six after a kill by Ashlie Jones. Later in the set, Freitas gave UTPA the 13-9 advantage with a kill. Macey Singleton closed out the second set with an ace giving the Broncs the second set win 25-16.
 
Freitas got the scoring started for the Broncs in the third set with a kill. After the Golden Lions tied the set at one, the Broncs went on to take the lead for good. An ace from Alisha Watson pushed UTPA's lead to 14-7. Arkansas-Pine Bluff then went on a 5-0 run to close the gap at 14-12 but the Broncs answered with an 11-8 run to win the set 25-20.
 
Haley Durham led the way for the Broncs with 10 kills and two blocks. Nycole Masaki posted 29 assists and eight digs. Shanice Faison added eight digs while Alisha Watson, Kasey Sanchez and Nausheen Merchant added seven digs.
 
Ayanna Parker and Audrey Sherles each had six kills to lead the Golden Lions. Jordan Foyer led the way with 24 assists while Courtney Brand posted 19 digs.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at noon when they face the University of Louisiana Monroe in the second day of the Sugar Bear Classic.
