CONWAY, Arkansas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team swept the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 3-0 for their fourth straight win on Saturday at the Sugar Bear Classic at the Prince Center.
The Broncs (5-2) fell behind early in the first set as the Warhawks (1-6) took the 6-3 lead after back-to-back attack errors.
Krysta Freitas tied the set at eight with a service ace. Later in the set, both teams exchanged points but the Broncs took the 15-14 lead with a kill by
Alisha Watson. UTPA scored the final three points to take the first set 25-22.
In the second set, the Broncs jumped out on a 6-0 run that was capped by a block by Watson and
Haley Durham. A kill by Durham extended the lead to 9-1 and then later a kill by
Maria Kliefoth made it 18-8 UTPA. The Warhawks got within four but the Broncs closed out the second set 25-20 on another kill by Kliefoth.
Watson got the scoring started in the third with a kill and then
Diara Reynolds followed with a kill of her own giving the Broncs the 2-0 early lead. Anjane Janda extended UTPA's lead to 6-1 with a kill. Later in the set, Reynolds and Durham teamed up for a block to make it 17-10. The Broncs scored the final three points to take the third set 25-17 and the match.
Maria Kliefoth recorded a team-high 10 kills while
Diara Reynolds and
Haley Durham recorded eight kills.
Nycole Masaki paced the offense with 33 assists and added eight digs.
Nausheen Merchant led the defense with 10 digs.
Hadley Schwartz led the Warhawks with 12 kills on offense and added nine digs. Marcela Araya led the defense with 13 digs and Blanca Ocana paced the offense with 17 assists.
The Broncs close out the Sugar Bear Classic at 7 p.m. against host Central Arkansas at the Prince Center.
