EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday that it will honor former men's basketball star
Mire Chatman, who played with the Broncs from 2000-02, during halftime of Thursday's 7 p.m. men's basketball game against Utah Valley at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
During the 2001-02 season, Chatman racked up the accolades, earning All-American Honorable Mention, Independent Player of the Year, Independent Defensive Player of the Year, All-Independent Team, UTPA Male Student-Athlete of the Year,
Basketball Times All-Southwest Region, CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-American, United States Basketball Writers Association All-District VII and NABC/Pontiac All-District IX Team honors while leading the Broncs to a 21-9 record. He ranked third in the NCAA in scoring average (26.2) and steals per game (3.6). Chatman also earned San Juan Shootout MVP and All-Tournament Team honors after hitting a pair of long threes to cap the Broncs' come from behind victory over Baylor in the championship game (12/21/01). The Broncs had been down 17 points with 17 minutes left.
In 2000-01, Chatman was the Independent Newcomer of the Year, Independent Defensive Player of the Year and part of the All-Independent Second Team. He ranked 10
th in the NCAA in steals per game (2.7).
During the 2001-02 season, Chatman broke the program record for steals in a season with 105. Coupled with his 78 steals as a junior, which ranks seventh in program history, Chatman finished second in program history with 183 career steals.
Chatman has many other entries in the Broncs record books, ranking ninth all-time in scoring (1,282), fourth in field goal percentage (.504) and tied for sixth in three-point shooting (.382).
During his senior season, Chatman scored 760 points, the third most in a single-season in program history, while attempting 236 free throws, which ranks fourth, averaging 26.2 points per game and hitting 165 free throws, both of which rank sixth, hitting 265 field goals, which ranks seventh, attempting 548 field goals, including 186 from behind the arc, both of which rank eighth, and shooting .435 from behind the arc, which ranks 10
th.
He had a pair of 40+ point games, dropping 46 at Texas A&M-Corus Christi (2/9/02) and 44 against New Mexico State (2/11/02), which are tied for seventh and ninth highest single-game totals in program history.
Chatman also had a pair of eight-steal games, first against Sul Ross State (12/17/01), and then against New Mexico State (2/11/02), tied for the fourth most in a single game in program history.
Chatman joined the Broncs after playing at Freed-Hardeman in 1998-99 and Southwestern Christian in 1999-2000.
Since graduating, the 6-2, 174-pound point guard from Garland has gone on to play professionally in Europe and Asia.
After playing for BK Ventspils in Latvia from 2002-04, Chatman moved on to Pau Orthez in France in 2004-05, where he led the Euroleague in assists at 6.2 per game.
In 2005-06, Chatman played with Dynamo Moscow in Russia, with whom he won the Union of European Leagues of Basketball Cup Championship.
Chatman moved to Italy to play with a club then known as Lottomatica Roma (now Pallacanestro Virtus Roma, or, for sponsorship reasons, Acea Virtus Roma) in 2006-07.
In 2007-08, Chatman went back to Russia to play for BC Triumph Lyubertsy.
Chatman joined Besiktas Cola Turka (now Besiktas JK Istanbul) in Turkey from 2008-11. In his first season, Chatman averaged 15.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.0 steals in 33 games.
During the 2009-10 season, Chatman was among the top three in the Turkish Basketball League (TBL) in scoring (18.4), assists (6.1) and steals (2.4) in 18 games. Overall, he averaged 19.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.3 steals in 24 games.
In 2010-11, Chatman averaged 15.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.7 steals in 38 games.
In 2011-12, Chatman signed with TBL rival Karsiyaka Basket (also known as Pinar Karsiyaka for sponsorship reasons), averaging 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.8 steals in 46 games.
During the 2012-13 season, Chatman again returned to Russia, this time with UNICS Kazan, also known as BC UNICS, averaging 11.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals in 49 total games, including 16.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.0 steals in 14 Eurocup games.
