EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team fell 3-4 to Western Athletic Conference rival the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Broncs (2-9) took control of the match early as they clinched the doubles point. The duo of
Ricardo Hopker and
Chetan Panditi beat the team of Felix Schueller and Ahmad Saleem 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. After the Broncs fell at No. 3 doubles,
Alejandro Sanoja and
Juan Cruz Soria defeated Nicolas Moulin and Adrian Legarreta 8-7 at No. 2 doubles, which gave them the point.
The Antelopes (5-4) answered back with straight set victories at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Sebastian Job fell against Adrian Legarreta as he dropped his first set 4-6 and then the second set 6-7 with a 13-11 tiebreaker. That match clinched the match for the Antelopes.
Juan Cruz Soria also took his match to three sets. After he dropped his first set to Nicolas Moulin 2-6, he bounced back with a 6-0 win in the second set and then followed that with a 6-4 win in the third.
Chetan Panditi closed out the match as he defeated Ahmad Saleem in straight sets 7-6, 7-6.
The Broncs are back in action on Sunday when they host conference rival Kansas City at 9 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
