Women's Tennis Set to Face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis hits the road for the first of six straight road matches as they face off against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at 3 p.m. on Monday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
After having their original home opener cancelled due to weather, the Broncs had their home opener on Sunday as they defeated the Prairie View A&M Panthers 6-1 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The Broncs took the early advantage in doubles as the duo of Reegan Greenwood and Katia Stavroulaki beat the team of Sydney Thomas and Payton Gore 6-1. The team of Didi Fatchikova and Mariana Ranzahuer then clinched the doubles point for the Broncs after they defeated Donielle Richard and Maria Lackey 6-2.
 
In singles, Stavroulaki started things off as she picked up her first career collegiate victory by defeating Gore in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Wanda Beguelin improved her record to 2-0 on the season as she followed with a victory in No. 3 singles beating Thomas 6-2, 6-1.
 
Greenwood clinched the match for the Broncs as she beat Alexandria Young 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles position. The Panthers picked up their only point of in No. 1 singles.
 
The Broncs closed out the match as Christell Amsallem and Ranzahuer picked up victories at No. 4 and 6 singles spots. Amsallem beat Lackey 36, 6-0, 10-4 while Ranzahuer beat Christine Gwodog 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
 
Scouting the Islanders 
The Islanders are 2-1 on the dual match season. They opened the season with a 6-0 victory against the University of Maryland Baltimore County and then six days later they fell to Southern Mississippi 4-3.
 
The Islanders are coming off of a 5-0 victory over Prairie View A&M on Feb. 5.
 
They return eight from last year's team that went 17-4 including 7-2 in the Southland Conference. Sandra Burges (15), Maider Martin (14), Stefania Nicolae (17) and Celia Rodriguez (14) posted double-digit victories last season.
 
Rodriguez leads the Islanders with a 3-0 record this season playing in the No. 4 singles position. Freshmen Judit Vives and Kerry Galhos are both 2-0 on the season as they have played in the No. 6 and 5 singles position, respectively.
 
The Series
The Broncs are 2-19 all-time against the Islanders in a series that dates back to 2000. They faced each other twice last season as the Broncs fell 1-6 in Corpus Christi on Feb. 7, 2013 and 0-7 at home on Feb. 19, 2013.
 
The Broncs got their last victory over the Islanders when they won 4-3 on Feb. 3, 2007 on a neutral site in Abilene.
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs currently have 10 student-athletes on the roster representing eight different countries including Bulgaria, Canada, England, France, Greece, Mexico, Slovakia and the United States.
 
Next Up
The Broncs continue their road trip as they head to San Marcos to face the Texas State Bobcats at 11 a.m. on Feb. 15 at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
