Sam Street (10-0) moved back into a tie for the NCAA-lead in wins while pitching his NCAA-leading eighth complete game to lead the Broncs baseball team past the Chicago State University Cougars 9-3 on Friday at Cougar Stadium.
In his fourth-straight complete game, Street struck out two while allowing 11 hits and two walks. He held the hitters leading off each inning 2-or-9 while inducing 14 groundouts and throwing 93 of his 139 pitches for strikes (66.91 percent).
Three Broncs (18-25, 8-8 WAC) had multi-hit games, led by senior
Shane Ammon, who went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, senior
Alex Howe, who went 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored, and junior
Evan Mason, who went 2-for-5.
The Broncs got on the board with two outs in the first, when sophomore PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez and freshman
Victor Garcia Jr. hit back-to-back RBI-singles off of Cougars (13-26, 2-11 WAC) starter
Andrew Wellwerts (2-7) to make it 2-0.
The Broncs doubled their lead in the third. After putting two on with nobody out, Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly, and then, one out later, redshirt junior Edinburg alum
Lee Rios reached on an error to score a run, making it 4-0.
The Cougars got their runs with one out in the fourth when
Rob Swenson hit a three-run home run. It was the first home run allowed by Street this season, snapping a streak of 94.1 innings without allowing a home run dating back to May 21, 2013. It was just the third home run allowed by Street in 211 career innings.
The Broncs put up five runs in the ninth on bases loaded walks by Ramirez and Garcia Jr., an RBI-single by Rios, an RBI-bunt single by junior
Jesus Garcia, and an RBI-single by freshman Edinburg alum
Edgar Cordon.
Ramirez finished with a season-high three RBI.
Due to impending inclement weather, the the final two games of the series will be played as part of a doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Game two was originally slated for Saturday at 4 p.m. while game there was set for Sunday at 1 p.m. There is rain in Sunday's forecast, necessitating the change.
Both games are scheduled for nine innings.
