EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team (13-6) plays its finals match before the WAC Championships on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (14-6) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Gates open at 1. Admission is free.
This is the makeup of a previously rained out contest that was scheduled to take place on February 26.
The Broncs are currently in the midst of the third winningest season in program history. The only times they won more were 1989-90, when they went 15-10, and 2007-08, when they went 17-8 en route to achieving the No. 15 ranking in the South Central Region.
The Broncs are coming off of a 5-2 win over Incarnate Word on March 21. At the time, with the makeup of this match uncertain, it was believed to be the Broncs' home finale as
Wanda Beguelin celebrated senior day with a hard fought 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-3) win at No. 2 singles.
Beguelin currently ranks seventh in program history in wins with 44.
Silke Buksik (2005-08) ranks sixth with 47. Beguelin also ranks tied for 14
th in doubles wins with 26. With a win on Wednesday, she will break a tie with
Ellen Nelissen (1991-95).
Sophomore
Reegan Greenwood is also climbing up in the rankings. With a singles record of 15-5, she is currently tied for fifth for best single-season winning percentage in program history at .750. With a win on Wednesday, Greenwood would move to into third place at .762, breaking a tie with
Kim Butler (1989) and passing
Celine Merlini (.758, 2001) and
Luisa Cantu (.760, 2008). Greenwood is currently tied with Butler and
Laura Gonzalez (1990) for the 19
th most wins in a season in program history. With a win she'll move into a tie for 17
th with
Tania Webster (1990) and
Stephanie Willerding (2008).
Greenwood also has the opportunity to break into program history in doubles winning percentage. She is currently 14-6 (.700). With a win on Wednesday, Greenwood would have the 15 wins needed to be on the leaderboard and would rank fifth at .714.
This is the 23
rd meeting all-time between the Broncs and the Islanders in a series dating back to 2000. The Broncs are looking for their third win and their first since Feb. 17, 2007, when they won 4-3 on the road.
