Baseball Drops Completion of Suspended Game to Sacramento State

Box Score

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Sacramento State Hornets 3-1 in the conclusion of a suspended game on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The game resumed with the Broncs (22-28, 12-10 WAC) up 1-0 in the top of the third. The Broncs kept senior Sam Street (11-1) on the mound, and he finished his NCAA-leading 10th complete game, but the Hornets (32-18, 18-4 WAC) scored three unearned runs in the seventh to hang Street with his first loss in exactly one year.

The inning started with an error and a single to put runners at first and second. One out later, pinch-hitter Ryan Locke hit a line drive to third. The runners were in motion, causing senior Alberto Morales to vacate his position and move towards the third base bag. That allowed the ball to get through to tie the game. Brandon Hunley followed with a fly ball to shallow left. Senior Shane Ammon made a diving catch, but pinch-runner Scott Loper came home. After a balk moved Locke to second, Kyle Moses hit a blooper to shallow right that was just out of the reach of a diving sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez to make it 3-1.

The Broncs were unable to muster anything against Sam Long (6-1), who pitched the final seven innings, striking out seven while allowing just one hit. He retired the final 19 batters he faced.

The Broncs got their run in the first on an RBI-double by senior Alex Howe against Brennan Leitao, who struck out three in two innings.

The game started at 7:15 p.m. on Friday and went into a lightning delay at 7:42 p.m. This was followed by a thunderstorm rolling through, preventing the game from being restarted. The game resumed on Saturday at 3:02 p.m. and ended up lasting 2:02.

The Broncs and Hornets play the regularly scheduled game at approximately 5:05 p.m.
