Box ScoreJACKSON, Miss. – Freshman Nikki Rowe alum
Ryan Jackson scattered five hits and struck out eight over eight innings, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks 1-0 in game two of the JSU Tournament on Friday at Robert Braddy Field.
Jackson (0-1) retired the first seven batters he faced and faced the minimum 11 batters through the first three and two-thirds innings. The lone blemish came at the start of the fifth inning, when
Nico Zych hit a leadoff home run. Immediately after that home run,
Luis Paublini doubled and moved to third on a groundout, but Jackson struck out the next two batters to keep Paublini from scoring.
Jackson only allowed one more base runner, on a sixth inning single, but erased him on a double play while retiring the final seven batters he faced.
Freshman
Johnny Gonzalez pitched a hitless ninth in his debut.
The Broncs (0-2) came up with three hits and five walks against Skyhawks (1-0) pitching, including a 2-for-3 performance by sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr. Carter Smith (1-0) pitched the first five innings, striking out eight while allowing one hit and four walks.
Patrick Benard pitched the final four innings, striking out five for his first save.
The Broncs got a runner to second base with two outs in the second, third, seventh and ninth innings. The seventh inning rally was created in part by pinch-hit single from sophomore Edinburg alum
Edgar Cordon.
The Broncs tried to rally with two outs in the ninth, as Garcia hit an opposite field double and senior
Logan Landon walked, but freshman
Isaac Gonzalez struck out to end the game.
The Broncs and Skyhawks play again on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Broncs then close out the tournament against Jackson State at 6.
